What does a security system cost in New Zealand?

Set the options below for an indicative installed price, built from published New Zealand rates. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a quote. Installers set their own prices and only a site visit can confirm what your job costs.

What do you want installed

Cabling and access

How hard the building is to run cable through is one of the largest swing factors in an installed price.

What actually moves the price

Security quotes vary more than most trades because the same hardware can take a day or three days to install depending on the building. These are the four things worth understanding before you compare quotes.

What you are installing

An alarm and a CCTV system are different jobs with different hardware. Bundling them usually costs less than commissioning them separately, because most of the labour is the same visit.

How many openings there are

Alarms are priced largely on sensor count, and sensor count follows doors, windows and the shape of the building. A five bedroom two storey home needs materially more hardware than an apartment.

How hard the building is to cable

This is the factor most people do not expect. Solid concrete, no roof space, heritage protection or a finished ceiling all mean more labour for the same hardware, and it is the most common reason two quotes differ.

Monitoring, which is a separate decision

A monitored system sends alarms to a staffed centre that can dispatch a response. That is charged monthly by the monitoring provider, not by the installer, so we show it on its own line rather than folding it into the install price.

Where these numbers come from

The base ranges come straight from the sources above. The adjustments do not. Every guide names property size, how hard the building is to cable, and location as major cost factors, but none of them publish a multiplier for any of it, so those adjustments are modest directional judgements rather than measured figures. Monitoring is quoted as a monthly figure by the monitoring provider and is not part of the installed price.
